Industrial Visit to Master Plannery & Thumbe Vented Dam

As part of industry-institute interaction, all the students of civil engineering have gone on a one-day industrial visit to the Master Plannery, Putter, and Thumbe Vented Dam &  Water Treatment Plant on June 21, 2023. The program was jointly organized by Department of Civil Engineering and Institute of Engineers (India) student’s chapter. A total of 36 students have attended the visit, accompanied by Prof. Chethan K. and Prof. Jameela.
During the visit to Master Plannery Puttur, Mr. Murali, HR of Master Plannery, explained the innovative building construction materials and methods of precasting doors and window frames, interlocks, wardrobes, furniture, staircases, dome construction, precast slabs, concwood, etc.
Later, all visited Thumbe vented dam site and water treatment plant. The Thumbe vented dam, built across the River Nethravathi, supplies water to Mangaluru, Ullal, Mulki, and other villages en route to the city. The Thumbe vented dam is the only source of drinking water for Mangaluru (Mangalore) city and surrounding areas. The height of the new vented dam is 12 M, and water could be stored up to 7 M. The new dam has 30 vents (through which water flows) and 29 piers. The engineer on site, Mr. Gangadhar, explained the salient features of the dam and water treatment plant.
