WEBINAR on DESIGN THINKING: CONCEPTS AND CAREERS

Exploring the art of practical and creative problems solving through the human centered process of design thinking, is something that is spoken all around and wisely implemented.

The Department of Basic Sciences in association with Centre for Professional and Organization Development (CPOD) and MFIRD, P.A College of Engineering organized a Webinar on 8th January 2022 focusing on Design Thinking Concepts and Careers for the first year students as a part of the curriculum Innovation and Design Thinking.

Dr. G.S. Javed, Technical and Execution Lead- Analog and Mixed Signal, INTEL India was the resource person who briefed the students on how creativity can be applied with logic to make things better at a personal or professional level. There are five basic tools for any design to take place –Empathize with people’s needs, collaborate with others need across disciplines, skill sets and perspectives. After which to include every idea in visible form for Evaluation and finally repeat, iterating and testing solutions. At every level there requires a collaboration and perceptive that turns the most basic thing into a resourceful one.

For students, professionals or any layman, these aspects of creativity would help, that is having a design, brain storming, thought and vision for ideas and research. He also stressed on his life examples emphasizing on how the design thinking process helps in problem solving. The steps to solve any problem is to first Define, then Empathize, Ideate, Prioritize, Build it, Test and Learn where finally you Share it.

He brought in an example of an MRI for children, where designers at General Electric designed an MRI machine for internal scanning of patients for tissue damage, where it didn’t look pleasant to the children and incited fear in them. To which they applied design process and brightened up the room with cartoon characters drawn on the walls and made the room more colorful, their patients who were children felt comfortable and it was easy to approach them. Later he gave another example on how the Government and other sectors worked hand in hand during the Covid Pandemic.

The webinar ended with a question answer session, having over 500 participants actively participate including students and Professors, broaden their thoughts.

Dr. Ramis M. K., Principal, P. A. College of Engineering thanked the guest for bringing it down to a perspective that was easier to comprehend. He also welcomed the people in the industry for interactions ad inputs like these.
