Cyber Security Workshop: Enhancing Skills for the Digital Age
Oct 21, 2024 - Oct 25, 2024
Coordinators: Dr. Sayed Abdulhayan, Dr. Zakir Bellary, Prof. Hussain, Prof. Faizal
Venue: Computer-Centre-II (Unix Lab)
Resource Person: Mr. Altaf Hussain Balsing
A comprehensive Cyber Security Workshop was organized from 21st to 25th October 2024 as part of a value-added course aimed at enhancing the technical skills of final-year students. This workshop was conducted through the collaborative efforts of the Placement Department-PACE, IEEE-CIS-PACE, IEEE-CS-PACE, the CSE Department-PACE, and the AIML Department-PACE. It was held at the Computer-Centre-II (Unix Lab) on the campus.
The workshop commenced with an inaugural session that included a welcome address and an introduction to the resource person, Mr. Altaf Hussain Balsing, an expert in cyber security. The workshop then transitioned into a series of theoretical and hands-on practical sessions over the course of five days, each day covering different aspects of cyber security.
Day 1 (21st October 2024): Introduction to Cyber Security Tools
The first day focused on introducing participants to the foundational concepts of cyber security. Mr. Altaf Hussain Balsing began by explaining the importance of cyber security in the modern digital age. He also demonstrated the usage of key cyber security tools such as Cisco Packet Tracer and Wireshark, with an emphasis on network simulation and packet sniffing techniques.
Day 2 (22nd October 2024): Cyber Security Projects and Command-line Tools
On the second day, the resource person introduced participants to practical cyber security projects using Netsh wlan commands and ipGrabify. These tools enabled students to explore network security vulnerabilities, such as monitoring wireless networks and tracking IP addresses. Hands-on sessions allowed students to work directly with these tools, gaining real-world skills in securing wireless networks.
Day 3 (23rd October 2024): Social Engineering and OSINT Framework
The third day delved into advanced cyber security concepts like Social Engineering and OSINT (Open Source Intelligence). Using tools such as SMikta, SEToolkit, and the OSINT Framework on Kali Linux, Mr. Balsing demonstrated how attackers might manipulate human behavior to gain unauthorized access. Participants learned how to defend against such attacks and use these tools for ethical hacking.
Day 4 (24th October 2024): Wireless Network Hacking and SQL Injection
Day four covered more advanced techniques, including Aircrack-ng, a popular tool for hacking wireless networks, and SQL injection payloads. Mr. Balsing gave a detailed session on how attackers can exploit vulnerabilities in SQL databases and how to prevent such attacks. The practical sessions allowed students to perform penetration testing and learn effective countermeasures.
Day 5 (25th October 2024): Advanced Penetration Testing Tools
On the final day, the workshop focused on Burp Suite, an intercepting proxy tool used for web application security testing, and Metasploit Framework, a powerful tool for developing and executing exploit code against remote targets. Mr. Balsing demonstrated how these tools can be used to find vulnerabilities in web applications and conduct penetration testing. The day ended with a Q&A session, where participants asked questions about the tools and techniques learned throughout the workshop.
Conclusion and Valedictory Function
The workshop concluded with a valedictory function where certificates were distributed to the participants. Mr. Altaf Hussain Balsing addressed the students one last time, answering their queries and providing further insights into the field of cyber security. The workshop was well-received by the students, who expressed appreciation for the practical skills and knowledge gained over the five days.
This workshop successfully enhanced the cyber security knowledge of final-year students, equipping them with the tools and techniques necessary to excel in the field of ethical hacking and information security.
